About Tatamá National Natural Park

Established to conserve one of the most biologically diverse and ecologically significant areas in Colombia, Tatamá National Natural Park straddles the western slopes of the Andes Mountains across the departments of Chocó, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca. The park encompasses an area of lush montane and cloud forests, which are part of the Chocó bioregion, one of the wettest and most biodiverse places on Earth. This natural sanctuary houses numerous endemic and endangered species, including the spectacular Andean cock-of-the-rock and the critically endangered spectacled bear. The geography is marked by steep, rugged mountains, high-elevation plateaus, and deep river valleys, creating spectacular scenery and varied microclimates. Visitors to Tatamá may explore dense forest trails, birdwatch in one of the world’s top bird hotspots, and discover waterfalls and crystal-clear streams. Hiking is the key activity, with several remote trails offering panoramic views, immersion in cloud forests, and encounters with rare wildlife. Due to its challenging terrain and limited infrastructure, the park appeals to adventurous eco-tourists and researchers focused on conservation. Tatamá’s remoteness and ecological richness make it a premier destination for nature lovers seeking solitude and pristine environments in the Colombian Andes.
